Got my hands on a bottle of Sexual Chocolate this year.
So the head brewer, Brian, went to the release party this year and grabbed a few bottles. Luckily, he was able to grab me a bottle as well. As excited as I am to have a bottle to try, I also need to plan a trip to the launch party. For those of you who don’t know, Foothills releases Sexual Chocolate once a year at their brewery. The night before, the brewery always has a bottle share, and then people hang out hours before the beer’s release. It sounds like the perfect reason to plan a trip to North Carolina. And, I keep hearing that Winston-Salem, NC has a good craft beer scene. Foothills was founded in 2004, and has become one of the biggest craft breweries in the South East. Hopefully, after a visit I will write a post about the brewery, until then click here to learn more about Foothills.
Let’s talk about the beer.
Sexual Chocolate is an Imperial Stout that checks in at nearly 10% ABV and 85 IBUs. Mine poured an dark black into the chalice glassware. It had a nice frothy barm that was light brown, and dissipated quickly. There is tons going on with the nose in this beer. Plenty of coffee and toffee smells as well as cocoa notes. The beer tastes, delicious, but also of ripe dark fruit. Reminds me of raisins and chocolate a lot. It’s bitter, but there’s so much going on it plays well. The beer has a heavy mouthfeel and you definitely notice the high gravity. The light carbonation makes you want to sip on this beer, and the taste compels you to do the opposite. Very good beer, next time hopefully I can make the trip, and enjoy the release.
