The Alchemist has changed ordinary ingredients into gold with the Focal Banger IPA!
I was able to try another tasty Vermont beer, the Focal Banger IPA! Once again, I have to thank my sister for the beer. It was one of several craft brews she brought back from VT, a few weeks ago. The Alchemist Brewery has an interesting story. They originally opened as a brewpub in Waterbury, VT back in 2004, shortly after that they launched the double IPA Heady Topper. Which is now world famous, and just the mention of its name will make beer geeks tune in. After Hurrican Irene devastated the brewpub in 2011, they didn’t have a retail space for a few years. However, as of this past summer they have opened a brand new retial facility in Stowe, VT. Which will make a variety of beers, including Focal Banger IPA. So, if you’ve been a fan of the Alchemist for awhile… now you got a reason to make the trip.
On to the beer! The Focal Banger IPA poured a pretty dark straw golden color. As I got deeper into the can the pours became more “chewy”. The head was about a finger width of white froth. The aromas from the glass were citrusy as hell. Grapefruit, orange, and pears were all prominent, as were some earthy notes. The taste, of course, was citrusy, but there was also bread and some piney hop flavors as well. It’s a medium body but there’s plenty of “pulp”. The carbonation was a little lighter than I expected. Finished dry with a little bitterness. One sip, is all you need to know that this is a fantastic beer. Luckily it comes in 16oz cans so you get several!
